What matters most when replacing an air conditioner? Not the brand. The three things that decide whether a new system is comfortable and lasts are correct sizing from a load calculation, ductwork that can actually move the air the system produces, and a proper startup that verifies airflow and refrigerant charge. A correctly installed mid-range system will outperform a premium system installed badly, every time. Everything on this page is about getting those three right.
Replacing an air conditioner is one of the larger purchases a homeowner makes, and it gets sold like it's all about the equipment: this brand, that efficiency rating, this many stages. The equipment matters, but it is not where systems fail. Systems fail because they were sized to the house next door, bolted to ducts that cannot breathe, and never properly started up. That is the part nobody quotes on and the part that decides whether you are comfortable for the next fifteen years.
When replacement is actually the right call
Repair is often the better answer, and there is a full framework for that decision on its own page. Replacement genuinely makes sense in a few situations:
- A major component has failed, the compressor or the coil, on a system near the end of a normal service life.
- The system uses R-22 refrigerant and has a significant leak. R-22 has not been produced or imported in the United States since 2020, so keeping it charged gets more expensive every year.
- Repairs are stacking up, and you have paid for two or three in a couple of seasons.
- The house was never comfortable, some rooms too hot, humidity too high, and the system runs constantly to keep up. That is often a sizing or duct problem that a like-for-like replacement will simply inherit.
- Your energy bills have climbed and the system is well behind current efficiency.
Why the right size is not just the old tonnage
The fastest way to spot a lazy quote is that it sizes the new system off the old one. "You had a three ton, we will put in a three ton." The old system may have been wrong from the day it went in, and a lot of them are oversized, because oversizing hides sloppy work and rarely gets a complaint on the hottest day.
The right way is a Manual J load calculation, which is the industry standard method for working out how much heating and cooling a specific house actually needs. It accounts for square footage, insulation, the number and orientation of windows, ceiling height, how leaky the house is, and local design conditions. In this region that means designing for roughly 98 degrees outside and the humidity that comes with an Oklahoma summer.
Bigger is not better, and here is why it matters
An oversized air conditioner cools the air fast, hits the temperature you set, and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull humidity out of the house. You get a house that is cold and clammy at the same time, the system cutting off too soon and wearing itself out, and uneven temperatures room to room. In a humid climate an oversized system is worse than one sized correctly, not safer. This is the single most common installation mistake, and it cannot be fixed after the fact without replacing the equipment.
The ducts decide the outcome more than the box
Here is the part almost nobody tells you: a new air conditioner is only as good as the duct system it is connected to. If the ducts are undersized, leaky, or poorly laid out, the best equipment in the world cannot move the air it is designed to move, and you have paid premium prices for mid performance.
In this region most ductwork runs through the attic, where summer temperatures reach 130 to 150 degrees. Every foot of leaky or uninsulated duct up there is dumping the air you paid to cool into a space that is already an oven. A proper replacement looks at the ducts, measures static pressure, and tells you honestly whether they are up to the job or whether part of the value of a new system will leak away before it reaches your rooms.
Sometimes the ducts are fine. Sometimes a few repairs make a large difference. Occasionally the honest answer is that the duct system is the actual problem and new equipment alone will not fix it. You should hear that before you buy, not after.
What a real quote contains
A one-line price on a piece of equipment is not a quote, it is a number. A quote you can trust and compare tells you what is being done and what is included. Ours lays out:

What installation day looks like
Protect the house
Floor coverings from the door to the equipment. We haul the old system away and leave the space clean.
Remove and prepare
Old equipment out, refrigerant recovered properly rather than vented, the space and connections prepared for the new system.
Set and connect
New equipment set, line set run, electrical and condensate connected, thermostat wired.
Evacuate and charge
The line set is evacuated to pull out moisture and air before refrigerant goes in. Skipping this shortens the life of the system, and it is a corner that gets cut on a rushed job.
Start up and verify
Airflow measured, refrigerant charge verified against the readings, temperature split checked, safety controls confirmed. Written down, not eyeballed.

Red flags in a competing quote
Get more than one quote. When you do, these are the things worth noticing, because they separate a real proposal from a number designed to win on price and make it back later.

Questions and answers
How much does a new air conditioner cost?
It depends on the size your house needs, the efficiency you choose, and the condition of your ductwork, which is exactly why an honest number requires someone looking at your home rather than quoting off a phone call. A straight equipment swap on good ducts sits at the lower end. A higher-efficiency or variable-capacity system, or one that needs duct work to perform, costs more and often earns it back in comfort and running cost.

What size air conditioner do I need?
The honest answer is that it cannot be known from your square footage alone, and anyone who gives you a tonnage over the phone is guessing. Two identical-sized houses can need different systems depending on insulation, windows, orientation and how leaky they are.
It is settled properly with a Manual J load calculation. That is not a premium add-on, it is the correct way to size any system, and it is the difference between a house that is evenly comfortable and one that is cold and clammy or never quite cools the back bedroom.
What is SEER2 and how high should I go?
SEER2 is the efficiency rating for cooling equipment. A higher number means the system delivers the same cooling for less electricity, so it costs less to run. New systems have a legal minimum, and you can pay more for higher ratings.
Higher efficiency is worth it when you run cooling a lot, which in Oklahoma you do, and when you plan to stay in the house long enough to earn back the difference on your bills. Should I replace the furnace at the same time?
Often, yes, and it is worth an honest look. The indoor coil for your air conditioner sits on top of the furnace, and matching a new outdoor unit to an old furnace and coil can cost you efficiency and complicate the warranty. If the furnace is also near the end of its life, doing both at once usually costs less than two separate jobs and gives you a properly matched system.

Do I need a permit to replace my air conditioner?
In most jurisdictions here, yes, replacement requires a permit and an inspection. That is not red tape for its own sake. The inspection is an independent check that the work was done to code, and it protects you, the homeowner, most of all.
A quote that leaves the permit out is often cheaper for exactly that reason, and it leaves you with unpermitted work that can surface when you sell the house. We pull the permit and handle the inspection as part of the job.
How long does an installation take?
A straightforward replacement is usually a single-day job. If ductwork needs attention, or the install is more involved, it can run longer, and we will tell you that up front rather than discovering it halfway through.
