It adds volume, defines the border, corrects small asymmetries and can lift a downturned corner slightly. It does not change your bone structure, fix a long upper lip, or make thin lips into someone else's mouth. The best results usually come from a small amount that respects the proportions you already have. If you want a bigger change than one syringe allows, building across visits is usually kinder to the tissue.
You talk through what you want, and your provider looks at your lip shape, the space between your nose and lip, your teeth and your smile. Medical history matters here, especially cold sores, blood thinners and any previous filler you have had.
Lips are sensitive, so numbing cream goes on first and usually sits for around twenty minutes. Most lip products also contain lidocaine, which builds as the treatment goes on. Ice helps too. Tell your injector if you need more time before starting.
The gel goes in through a fine needle or a blunt cannula, in small amounts, with your injector checking symmetry as they work. It usually takes fifteen to thirty minutes. You will be sat up and shown a mirror along the way.
Lips swell more than anywhere else on the face. Expect them to look bigger than the final result for the first two or three days, and possibly a little uneven while the swelling settles. Cold compresses help. Sleeping with your head slightly raised helps too.
By around two weeks the lips have settled and what you see is what you have. This is the point to judge the result, not day two. If something needs adjusting, a small top up or a little dissolving can be discussed then.
Lip filler does not last as long as filler in still areas, because the mouth is always moving. Most people come back when they notice the shape softening rather than on a fixed schedule. Your provider can suggest a sensible interval for you.
