How wrinkle relaxers work on the face

Every time you frown, squint or raise your brows, the muscle underneath creases the skin above it. Do that for years and the crease stays. A neuromodulator blocks the signal from nerve to muscle in the small area treated, so the muscle contracts less and the skin above it has a chance to lie flat. It wears off. The nerve endings recover, movement returns, and the treatment is repeated if you want it repeated.

The products, and what each is approved for

Botox

Approved for several facial areas Established. Botox Cosmetic carries FDA approval for frown lines between the brows, crow's feet, forehead lines and, more recently, the vertical bands of the neck. It has the longest record of use in aesthetics and the most published data behind it.

Longest record

Dysport

Dysport is approved in the United States for frown lines between the brows. Injectors often describe it as spreading a little more within the tissue, which some prefer across a broad forehead, and many people notice it working a day or so sooner. Dosing units are not interchangeable with other brands, so the numbers do not compare directly.

Often quicker

Daxxify

Daxxify is approved for frown lines between the brows. It is formulated with a peptide instead of human serum albumin, and the manufacturer's studies report a longer average duration than the older products. Real world experience varies quite a bit, so it is worth asking your provider what they actually see.

Onset, peak and duration

Patience.Nothing happens on the day. Most people see the first change around three to five days in, with the full effect at about two weeks. That is when a result should be judged, and when any small adjustment is usually made. Duration commonly runs three to four months, though it differs by product, by dose, by muscle strength and by person. Some people find it lasts longer with repeat treatment.

Common questions

Will I still be able to move my face?

Yes. The aim is softer lines, not a face that cannot move. Movement.Tell your provider how much expression you would like to keep.

How soon will I see the results?

First changes usually appear three to five days after treatment, and the full effect at around two weeks. Book any event with that in mind, and do not judge the result on day three.

How long do the results of treatment last?

Three to four months is the usual range for most products and most people. Muscle strength, dose, area and how much you exercise all shift it. Your provider will give you a realistic expectation.

Is one brand better than all the others?

Not in general. They are all purified botulinum toxin type A with slightly different formulations and different approved areas. What matters far more is the person injecting, the dose and the placement. Your provider will explain their choice.

Can it be used in other facial areas?

Often, yes. Many popular uses, including the jaw, the chin, the neck and a lip flip, sit outside the approved indications. That is legal and common, and worth discussing openly.

Does the injection hurt?

The needle is very fine and each injection takes a second. Most people describe a quick pinch. Ice or a topical numbing cream can be used if you would prefer it.

Who should not have a wrinkle relaxer treatment?

Some people should wait. Ask. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, an infection at the injection site, a known allergy, and certain neuromuscular disorders are all reasons to hold off.

Come in and talk it through

A consultation takes a few minutes and saves a lot of second guessing. Your provider watches how your face actually moves, works out which muscles are doing the folding, and suggests a dose that softens the lines without flattening your expression. You will hear what to expect at day three, at two weeks and at three months.
